Southwest Florida golf communities enable residents to encounter some of the finest fairways this side of paradise, only moments from the sanctuary of your home. Our region has long been popular with some of the greatest athletes and enthusiasts of the game. In fact, the per capita proliferation of public and private holes has enabled our region to become heralded as “The Golf Course Capital of THE WORLD.”
Our team is often asked questions such as, “Where are the best Southwest Florida Golf Communities?” That’s a difficult question and as so often happens when determining the best answer, it essentially comes down to who you might ask. For instance, ask Arnold Palmer, he might well say that it is Wildcat Run. After he designed the course within this Estero community, Palmer was quoted as saying it might be the best course in the southeastern United States.
Ask Greg Norman, he could very well assert the same for the Tiburon course he designed at the Ritz Carlotn Golf Resort and community in Naples. And here’s a fun fact. The Ritz Carlton Golf Resort was established along the easterly stretch of Vanderbilt Beach Road, only minutes from the Ritz Carlton Beach Resort situated to the west. Naples is the only city in the world that has two separate Ritz Carlton Resorts located along the same street; a distinction made possible by our region’s love for golf.
In other cases, figuring out which Southwest Florida golf communities are best might involves understanding of your particular capabilities. Say, for example, that you’re a beginner. If so, you might well consider the Jed Azinger & Gordy Lewis-designed course at Stoneybrook in Estero. According to the National Golf Course Owners Association, Stoneybrook is one of only a handful of courses throughout America to earn certification as a “Beginner Friendly.”
Then again, if you possess real talent, you might want to live a little closer to Old Corkscrew.
This course, the only stand along Jack Nicklaus Signature Course in the region, has also been described as the area’s most challenging. Nicklaus himself shot a 9 on the 5th Hole during the grand opening of the course. On many occasions, when talking about courses that have bullied the best, the TPC Treviso Bay course in Naples is described in the very same tones of admiration (or contempt) endured by Old Corkscrew.
Of course, there are several Southwest Florida Golf communities which always seem to rank in a variety of surveys. Travel & Leisure has compiled a Top 100 List of Golf Communities in America. The following Southwest Florida golf communities figure in their ranking:
- Fiddler’s Creek, also designed by Jack Nicklaus
- Grey Oaks, the 54 holes of golf here were designed by Bob Cupp, Lloyd Clifton, Ken Ezell and George Clifton
- Mediterra, the Naples golf community features 36 holes of golf designed by Tom Fazio.
- Twin Eagles, this community was former host to a Champion Tour event and features 36 holes of golf designed by Jack Nicklaus & Gary Player
- Bonita Bay, a community that provides residents five championship courses designed by Tom Fazio and Arthur Hills.
But let’s say you’re someone more aligned to the perspective of aficionados at Golf Magazine, you might then consider Talis Park where the P.B Dye & Greg Norman-designed course ranks among America’s Top 25 Golf Communities. As for the staff at Golfweek, both Talis Park and Fiddler’s Creek rank among America’s Best Resident Courses.
Meanwhile, staff at Golf World suggest’ Lely Resort and its three courses are among America’s Top 50 Resort Courses.
So again, the point here is that determining which Southwest Florida golf communities are best just depends on who you ask. As to what I think, well, it may just be the course that is closest to your back door. Fortunately, we have many residential options that enable you to step right out of your home and on to a fabulous fairway. This no doubt figures in why U.S. News and World Report ranks our region among the “Top 10 Great Retirement Spots for Golf Nuts.” To be sure, local golfers know we’re really #1.
